The bald guy is in fact Coach Percy D. Haughton, Harvard ‘99. So in 1912 he was in his mid-30s. A star in several sports, he still was one of the nation’s best all-around athletes.
I'm guessing he was a graduate coach, an alum who returned to tutor the undergrads, who also wanted to show he still had what it took to play the game. I could be wrong, but I doubt it.
