Before offensive players could use their hands, body blocking was widely used in the interior line and the open field. Like any other aspect of the game, players practiced body blocking using the normal assortment of dummies. Open field body blocks were especially fun once pop-up dummies came on the scene. The ring on top provided a target such that blocks thrown below the ring likely would succeed in taking down an opponent.
