Purdue coach Jimmy Phelan received a brand-new Marmon 78 in appreciation for leading Purdue to a 6-2 record during the 1927 season. The Boilermakers beat DePauw and Franklin while going 4-4 against major-college opponents, none of which had a winning record. Phelan so appreciated the gesture he bolted for another job after the 1928 season.
