Football officials sometimes deal with balls kicked high above the uprights. Such kicks can be challenging to judge whether the ball flies inside, over, or outside the uprights, so the last thing teams and fans need are officials whose judgment is impaired.

With that in mind, I found an interesting pairing in a 1955 Football Schedule giveaway published by Brown-Forman, a manufacturer of numerous liquor brands. As often with these giveaways, the Brown-Forman booklet included illustrations of officials' signals. This time, however, the opposing page listed three cocktail recipes. Whether the editors chose the placement to poke fun at officials will likely remain a mystery, but I'm guessing their tongues were planted firmly in their cheeks.
