I recently wrote about John Lockney’s invention, Lockney Lines, and their rapid spread. In the world that existed after hash marks came along and before Lockney Lines arrived, some groundskeepers took it upon themselves to mark the field with continuous stripes rather than hashes intersecting each yard line.
The continuous hash showed up here and there but never caught it, and we now know that Lockney Lines served the same purpose as the continuous hash and provided additional value.
