Colgate prepared for the 1921 season using the game’s latest practice techniques. First, the team’s passers worked on their accuracy by throwing at targets various distances downfield. Later in practice, the backs developed their leg drive using the bucking strap. Invented by Fred Folsom, after whom Colorado named Folsom Field, teammates held the handles on either side of the strap. A third running back received the ball, inserted his head in the target, and charged forward while his bronco-busting teammates held onto the handles to offer resistance.
