I recently watched the early 50s movie 'That's My Boy'. If you haven't seen it, it's a great time capsule of college football. All the equipment, two-way playing, and aesthetics of the sport from that time. There's a Sammy Baugh reference, and a glancing reference to the Rose Bowl (if I remember right).
The movie is available on Amazon Prime and I started watching it, but I have a low tolerance for Jerry Lewis, so it may take a few days for me to see the whole thing. My guess at the real Ridgeville U, if there is one: Occidental beat USC in 1907, 1909, 1911, and 1912; Whittier won in 1909, 1910, and 1911; Pomona in 1908, and Redlands in 1906. (per CPT)
But to his credit, he carries a very funny scene where the team trainer tosses Lewis around like a rag doll. There are a couple practice scenes in the middle of the movie where ya see their old heavy bags for linemen. And the last few minutes is a full-on leather helmet scene. Something that caught my eye, Lewis is the team nerd and is the only player with a sloppy face mask attached to his leather helmet. Wonder if in the early 50s, face masks were looked down on as goofy, or an imminent softening of the game by traditionalists? Thanks again for your research.
It was on, I believe, Pasadena's Coronado Blvd. that I drove (slowly) past the grandest display of holiday lights I've ever seen. A few days later, Warren Moon's Washington team won the 'Bowl game in a torrent, '77 or '78.
I have to assume the Bowl and the Tournament were named after the horticulture class the Pasadena area specialized in...
Yes, sir! Here's the scoop: https://www.visitpasadena.com/blog/rose-parade-history/
