I published an image a few days ago in the story about the 1931 Wisconsin-Minnesota game that showed fans watching the game for free by standing or sitting on a fence. Rather than paying for the best seat in the house, those fans paid nothing for the best seat they could find outside the house. To honor those fans who refused to pay the price, I offer this selection of images. (Click the images to enlarge.)
The scene of the 1908 Iowa State at Drake game does not appear to have fans getting a free view of the game but check out the folks above the fence on the left.
Zooming in shows those are people who climbed the trees to gain a bird’s eye view.

These are great images! Spectators outside the stadium can also be dangerous and lead to tragedy like the 1900 Thanksgiving Day contest between Cal and Stanford. I have an image in this post a from a few years ago of the folks on the roof before it collapsed. https://pigskindispatch.com/pGM8
