Oops sorry I see the 1921 Trophy was awarded in January of 1921 for the best teams in 1920. Greasy will retract his petition.

On behalf of Greasy Neale and the 1921 W&J Presidents I would like to file a formal protest of the 1921 Eugene C. Bonniwell Trophy, especially since W&J beat Pitt. LOL

Those Philadelphians have always been a bit snooty toward the Western PA folks. Also, since W&J tied Cal in the Rose Bowl, it seems reasonable that there wasn't an unanimous choice.

Not uncommon back then for a championship trophy to be permanently awarded to a team or person who won it three times (sometimes all three consecutive, depending on the rule when the trophy was first sponsored). This happened in golf, tennis, football and the first major league baseball championship trophy, the "Dauvray Cup." This may be what happened with Notre Dame winning it the third time and why it is in their trophy case.

I believe their trophies stayed with the winner every year, but I agree the three-time winner thing was widespread.

That is indeed what happened in golf with the Ardsley Cup, which was recently rediscovered in a rather unassuming trophy display at Harvard
