Shortly after publishing Fields of Friendly Strife, Michael Weinreb interviewed me for an article on The Athletic about the 100th anniversary of the 1918 Rose Bowl. Several quotes from our interview and other story elements from the book are part of the article about the 1918 Rose Bowl, including:

“I wouldn’t say it saved the Rose Bowl, but it certainly solidified it,” says Timothy Brown, author of the recently published Fields of Friendly Strife: The Doughboys and Sailors of the World War I Rose Bowls. “And in the broader picture, I believe that these service teams were also critical to the development of the NFL.”
