One of the things I've always noticed in the Marx Brothers movie "Horsefeathers" is that the holder is lying on his stomach during placekicks. For me that was more bizarre than any of the actual Marx Brothers antics.
Yes, and that was in 1932. Figuring someone connected to the making of the movie must seen a football game recently, that may have still been the way teams were doing the placekick. Sort of ruins the attempt if it's anything besides a perfect snap, doesn't it?
Few, if any, teams held the ball like that by 1932. The free kick after touchdown went away in the early '20s. They snapped and held the ball like today by then, so perhaps it was an inside joke by the Brothers Marx.
