Stagg also played in the first public basketball game as a teammate of James Naismith on the teachers' team of the YMCA against the students. The March 12, 1892, Springfield Republican article about the game says: "...The most conspicuous figure on the floor was Stagg in the blue Yale uniform, who managed to have a hand in every scrimmage. His football training hampered him, and he was perpetually making fouls by shoving his opponents. He managed, however, to score the only goal that the instructors made..." The students won the game 5-1.
