James White is pictured in the lower right (#18) with Virginia’s 1913 team. (1914 Spalding’s Foot Ball Guide)

Dr. J. L. White, the pastor of Vineville Baptist Church in Macon, Georgia, faced a dilemma one Saturday in November 1914 when two sons played opposite one another in a football game. Russell was the left end at Lanier High School, while Charles was the quarterback and captain at Locust Grove Prep. Another son, James, started at left end for Virginia, and the oldest son, Hubert, played for his medical school team.

Unfortunately, Dr. White did not see any of his sons play that day. He was on the Board of Trustees at a third college that did not have a football team, but had a board meeting scheduled that afternoon.
