Interesting history. When you see the medicine ball in that 1910 photo, makes sense why they didn't bother much with a passing game.

Yep. The rugby balls used in the 1870s were even bigger, slightly larger than today's basketball.

As I have probably noted before, this practice extended to other semi-pro sports besides football at that time.
